Why the 3rd Degree? Some clues

'Scientists agree an average temperature increase of 2 degrees or more would result in dangerous and irreversible climate change. We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by between 25-40% of 1990 levels by 2020 to avoid severe social, economic and environmental impacts.' - WWF Australia, November 6, 2008

‘Climate scientists argue that unless the world can stabilize its greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a maximum of 450 parts per million (ppm), it risks warming the planet above 2.5 degrees. A rise of 3 degrees or over is likely to trigger “catastrophic consequences”, including the loss of a third of the world’s species and a sea level rise that will threaten millions of lives.’ – The Sydney Morning Herald, October 31, 2008
